In TV We Work On Commission!

Seth Godin slapped me in the face saying, “We ALL work on commission these days.” He was referring to a recently laid off columnist at The Washington Post because his blog posts didn’t get enough web traffic. How things have changed.

Olympic athletes are rewarded not on effort but on performing at their peak when it counts and that means performing at their peak over and over again when it doesn’t. If we aren’t performing at our peak over and over again should we be paid? Are we simply entitled to be rewarded no matter what?

Ask an Olympian and they will tell you they are dedicated to their sport (which is their job) for the pure love and joy of it. They live it and breathe it every day because it is a passion. Are you an Olympian or just “phoning it in?”

Loved the post, Margie. I just had this conversation today with our corporate coach, Pete Walsh of Peak Performance. He often uses sports analogies to focus on our “training and practice” as top performing business athletes. You’re dead on: We have to BRING IT every day. Thanks for sharing your insights with us.
