Wow, NBC is getting bashed left and right these days. I read a radio industry blog today making it sound like the worst job on earth is to be selling at an NBC affiliate.
Look, it’s no secret the Leno move was a mistake and an extremely expensive one for the network and the affiliates. But let’s give NBC credit for trying something different and, more importantly, for cutting the cord soon after it was clear it wasn’t going to work (and the affiliates threatened with swords). NBC made the very public and expensive move. They knew the PR would be disasterous and they were right! But, nonetheless, they did it.
To simplify the situation, they had people in wrong positions. Do you have NBC’s guts?

All I can say…bad move by NBC 5 years ago when Jay was “told” or “agreed” to retirement..
They took a risk, they learned. That’s what life and business is all about. You don’t know unless you put your neck out every once in awhile. This will be remembered short term, until another network or celebrity does something to deter the attention. Go out there, try new things and keep your head up high no matter what the result!
Look at the positive side to selling NBC, as a “Marketing Consultant” we will find creative ways to enlarge the audience viewing our clients message (commercial) and we will follow the footsteps of the network…if it doesn’t work, we will try hard to fix it!
Yes, and then some!
Good point and one that’s been missed, I think. Good for Zucker that he did what many others don’t have the guts for, and that message definitely applies for our sales organizations today. However, I do think that they had the right man at 11:30pm and cut too soon on that, but that remains to be seen.
Love these comments! Thanks everyone!! Dave, I agree. Thought Conan was great and, yes, I am totally out of the demo everyone said he appealed to! And Rashunda is right on. Fix problems, don’t ignore them!
