I just read a quote from Seth Godin – “Painless and quick are rarely associated with successful.” I couldn’t help but think of the broadcast industry. The transformation needs to be quick if we are to remain relevant and it appears the velocity of change determines how painful it will be. Given the urgency this will be VERY painful. Centralization as part of the adaptation will mean many may find themselves facing new or non-existing employment challenges. Those absorbed in keeping the status quo or making minimal moves to adapt to our new world will be thrust aside. Worse yet, companies afraid and somewhat immobilized will become dinosaurs quickly.
So what does this means to YOU? It means now more than ever it is time to determine what “success” looks like today and tomorrow. How much are YOU willing to endure and for how long on YOUR path to success? Are YOU part of the problem or part of the solution? It’s easy to coast along and blame others – your managers, your clients, and your company as a whole. But what good is that? At the end of the day (or the unemployment line-ugh) it will still be YOU deemed irrelevant!
Are YOU creating new ideas for your Manager, your clients, your company? Ideas so powerful they can’t be ignored? Ideas so forward thinking they propel your client into, as Seth would say, ”remarkable?” Ideas so revolutionary many don’t even understand them yet?!
The broadcast industry will become relevant again one person at a time. Are you joining the “quick and painless” or are you going for “successful?” If you choose the latter, I hope to feel your pain and celebrate your successes with you. Remember, one person at a time will make the difference and that person can be YOU.
